Airfreight at FRA Hits New Historical Record
FRANKFURT, November 10, 2010 - In October 2010, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed more than
five million passengers for the fourth month running. Some 5.02 million
passengers used FRA during the reporting month, an 8.5 percent year-on-year
increase. Thus, FRA's cumulative figures for January-to-October 2010 advanced
by 4.4 percent to 45.1 million passengers year-on-year.
Airfreight at FRA hit a new historical record of 206,085
metric tons in October 2010, up 15.8 percent year-on-year. The previous top
month was in May 2010 when FRA handled 204,332 metric tons. Total airfreight
tonnage jumped by 25.7 percent during the first 10 months of 2010. Despite
the growing trend toward larger planes at FRA, aircraft movements climbed by
four percent to an astonishing 42,320 takeoffs and landings in October 2010.
However, passenger traffic for January-to-October 2010 developed
under-proportionately at 0.7 percent, due to unfavorable conditions at the
start of the year. In contrast, cumulative maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs)
registered much stronger growth of 3.2 percent year-on-year in the first 10
months of 2010. In October 2010, MTOWs jumped by 6.8 percent.
Beyond its FRA home base, Fraport's leading majority-owned
airports continued to achieve strong growth. Antalya (AYT) Airport on the
Turkish Riviera registered a 22.7 percent gain in traffic, while Peru's Lima
Airport (LIM) recorded a 24.6 percent surge in passengers. In contrast,
Fraport's two airports on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast grew at differing
rates. Passenger throughput at Burgas Airport (BOJ) grew by 6.2 percent and
at Varna Airport (VAR) by 3.2 percent. However, these figures reflect the
relatively small statistical base outside the summer operating season.
Overall, Fraport's majority-owned airports (including FRA)
served a total of 8.5 million passengers in October 2010, up 13.9 percent
year-on-year.
