Jury Announced for the 2012 Lionel Gelber Prize

TORONTO and WASHINGTON, October 25, 2011 -

Sara Charney, Chair of the Lionel Gelber Prize and niece of Lionel Gelber, the Canadian scholar, diplomat, and author in whose memory the prize was created, today announced the five international thinkers and influencers who will serve on this year’s jury. They include a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, a distinguished historian of British foreign policy, and an iconoclastic economist, as well as one of Canada’s most distinguished editors.

In announcing the 2012 jury members Sara Charney commented: “We are gratified that the Prize attracts such distinguished jurors. It is an honour to have their services for the 22nd anniversary of the Prize.”

The Jurors for the 2012 Lionel Gelber Prize are:

  • Gaynor Lilian Johnson (Manchester, Britain)
  • Daniel Paul Henninger (New York City, USA)
  • Russell Roberts (Braddock, Virginia,  USA)
  • William Thorsell (Toronto, Canada)

About the Prize:

The Lionel Gelber Prize, a literary award for the world’s best non-fiction book in English on foreign affairs that seeks to deepen public debate on significant international issues, was founded in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber. A prize of $15,000 is awarded to the winner. The award is presented annually by the Lionel Gelber Foundation, in partnership with Foreign Policy Magazine and the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto.

Shelagh Grant was the 2011 winner for her book Polar Imperative: A History of Arctic Sovereignty in North America published by Douglas & McIntyre.

Key Dates in 2012:

The shortlist will be announced on Monday, February 13, and the winner will be announced on Monday, March 12, 2012, via press release. The winner will receive his or her award and speak at a free public event, to be held in at the Campbell Conference Facility at the Munk School of Global Affairs on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, in Toronto, Canada.
