ROTTERDAM - Dutch broadsheet newspaper NRC Handelsblad can now be read on all standard eReaders available in the Netherlands, including the devices produced by Sony, Bebook, Bookeen and Cool-er. The number of potential readers will increase substantially because the improved ePaper can also be read on an iPhone or iPod, as it is now available in both PDF and in Adobe’s ePub format. This open file format is easily accessible on multiple types and sizes of eReaders.

‘This is a key step forward in the digital availability of our information’, says Gert Jan Oelderik, Director and Publisher of NRC Media. ‘The information our editorial staff produces is extremely valuable. Not only as “ink-on-paper”, but equally as “pixels-on-screens”. The steady growth in our paid internet and ePaper subscriptions demonstrates that an increasing number of subscribers recognises this fact.’

On 6 March 2008, NRC Handelsblad became one of the world’s first daily newspapers to be published as an ePaper on the iRex iLiad eReader. NRC Handelsblad currently serves 2,500 ePaper subscribers and over 9,800 web subscribers in the Netherlands and abroad.

NRC Handelsblad’s ePaper is the digital format of the printed newspaper and can be downloaded daily from 3:00 p.m. CET for a monthly subscription fee of EUR 16.50. Twelve-month subscriptions are currently being offered, for a limited time only, for just EUR 139.50. A subscription to NRC Handelsblad Digitaal entitles subscribers to receive both the ePaper and have access to the online edition via www.nrc.nl. In order to boost the introduction of this new service, NRC Handelsblad is offering everyone who owns an eReader the opportunity to receive a free six-week trial subscription to the ePaper. NRC Handelsblad ePaper is published in Dutch. To sign up for this offer, go to www.nrc.nl/epaper.
