LONDON, March 5, 2010 - Paradigm Housing has won a second award for its ambitious eco-community
in Hayes. On March 2, Greenwood Close won Sustain' Magazine's 2010 Hansgrohe
Award for Development.
The judges scrutinised entries looking for excellence, sustainability and
the environmental, social and economic benefits of each development.
Greenwood Close stood out because it is the first large-scale affordable
housing initiative to achieve Level 5, Code for Sustainable Homes in London
and the South.
They commented "For the judges, this sensitive, sustainable, infill
project displays good use of MMC and shows care with issues of visual
intrusion."
Andrew Main, Paradigm's Executive Director for Business Development said:
"We are delighted to be recognised for this sustainable development and very
proud to have achieved Code Level 5."
The development, completed in 2009, provides 24 one- and two-bedroom
apartments at an affordable rent for people on Hillingdon's housing register.
It was built in partnership with the London Borough of Hillingdon with
funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.
The striking look of the five low-level buildings was created by
architects Arcanthus.
Advanced green features include a biomass boiler to supply heating and
hot water, a curving sedum roof for each of the five low-level buildings and
a rainwater storage system to provide water for flushing toilets. Issues such
as water use, waste and recycling were all carefully considered in the build.
Greenwood Close previously won Best Off-site Housing Development in the
UK at the Offsite Construction Magazine Awards in October 2009. It was also a
finalist for the Sustainable Smaller Social Housing Project of the Year
category in Inside Housing's 2009 Sustainable Housing Awards.
