LONDON - www.MakeCharity.com the online search engine whose revenues are purely directed at charities, has teamed up with the pioneering Brazilian project, Reciclar.

The “Instituto de Reciclagem do Adolescente” (Adolescent Recycling Institute) - Reciclar - was founded in 1995 to provide education, professional apprenticeships and the opportunity of a first job for young adults living in or close to ‘favelas’, the infamous shanty towns, in the State of Sao Paulo in Brazil. The Institute produces and sells a number of recycled products where all sales proceeds go back towards the development of the local community. In 2007 alone 120,000 products such as books, picture frames and diaries were produced from these workshops by recycling some 12 tonnes of paper.

Since 1995 the project has helped over 235 young adults of which 75% are now in full-time employment. A further 120 are currently enrolled with the institute hoping to follow in the footsteps of those students before them. In 2007 the Institute was nominated to take part in the Business Guide to Partnering with NGO’s for the United Nations Global Compact initiative whose objective is to support global companies to identify reliable and trustworthy organisations to work in partnership with.

MakeCharity.com was founded in 2006 by Nick Rawdon-Jones and Roberto Zuccolo to help raise funds and awareness for charity organisations. The site is a search engine and homepage where all revenues are directed towards charitable projects and has so far raised close to $12,000. Roberto Zuccolo explains how the website works: “Every time a user visits www.MakeCharity.com they are ‘donating’ a hit or page view. The higher the number of hits, the higher the potential revenue generated from advertisers on the website, all of which goes to charity. By making MakeCharity.com your homepage, you will be donating every time you open your internet browser.”

The Reciclar institute is the 11th project supported by MakeCharity.com and will be the main focus of its campaign over the next few months. As Nick Rawdon-Jones explains, “The severity of the current economic environment has made it incredibly difficult for organisations such as the Reciclar Institute to raise funds, therefore dramatically increasing the risk of it being forced to close down. These projects are vital to communities most in need and we must ensure their long term success.”
