UK Based Media Start-up Provides Comprehensive Perspectives on the News
LONDON, May 20, 2010 - News is everywhere. It's on mobiles, on desktops, on laptops, and in the
office elevator. But that doesn't mean we know more. A 2007 study by the Pew
Research Center found, for example, that despite living in a 24-hour news
cycle, Americans actually know less about current affairs than they did two
decades earlier.
And it's precisely that disparity between glut of information and dearth
of knowledge that The Periscope Post aims to reconcile.
The Periscope Post(www.periscopepost.com/) is an online news site
that pulls together the most interesting commentary pieces from major
international news outlets, blogs, and other sources, in short, lively
articles. Unlike an aggregator, Periscope gives context to the news stories
everyone is talking about, and offers an opportunity to hear opinions from
across the political and ideological spectrum. And, in an era when most
readers are empowered to shape how stories are covered by tweeting, blogging,
or participating in programs like CNN's iReport, Periscope readers can
contribute to the conversation by publishing their own opinions on the site.
"Periscope combines the best aspects of professional journalism with the
democratic ideals of citizen journalism," says Editor-in-Chief, Linda
Rodriguez McRobbie. "We offer consumers an opportunity to spend less time and
be better read."
Origins
The origins of Periscope go back to January 2009, when founder Thomas D.
Gommes decided - at the height of the recession - to quit a stable and
well-paid job as a corporate lawyer to launch a start-up in a precarious news
industry. Although his professional experience was as a lawyer, Gommes had
media experience through his involvement with a family publishing business
and a Master's in Journalism at Columbia University.
The Periscope Team
Leading the day-to-day editorial team is editor-in-chief, Linda Rodriguez
McRobbie, also a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism.
Linda joined Periscope in 2009 following a successful freelance career that
included writing for CNN Money.com, The Christian Science Monitor, Mental
Floss, and American Way. Before that she was an editor at South End News in
Boston. Other members of the Periscope editorial team have backgrounds
ranging from The Times Literary Supplement, to Hearst Magazines, Al Jazeera
English, and Televisa Mexico.
