TomDick&Sally.com Survey Shows 80% of Gay Community Still Feel the Need to Hide Sexuality in the Workplace

LONDON - www.tomdickandsally.com - the UK’s brand new dedicated dating site for those in the gay community who are looking for a lasting relationship - has conducted a comprehensive survey of over 1,000 gay and lesbian people looking at attitudes towards dating and finding love in today’s so called modern and media driven world.

Some of the findings are surprising and blow out of the water the widely held view by many mainstream commentators that gay men, especially, are not interested in developing or holding down long term and committed relationships.

For most people, the workplace is a great place to find love but sadly this isn’t an option for a large portion of the survey’s respondents as a shocking 80% feel they sometimes have to hide their sexuality at work. Whilst nearly half of those surveyed do not feel they have the same opportunity to meet potential partners as straight friends - both at work or elsewhere.

Two thirds of those questioned had turned to on-line dating in the last year and nearly half are active and regular users. However, over one third of those surveyed would not be happy for their family or friends to know that they used on-line dating, which is a real contradiction.

The main reasons sighted were that many sites are sleazy, contain too much porn and that there is an element of dishonesty and a lack of responsiveness from potential matches - not exactly an ideal recipe for love and commitment!

The gay scene is widely feted as being an ‘open community’ where meeting potential partners is easy, but the survey shows that this normally means sex and only just over one in ten felt that ‘the scene’ meets their needs in terms of finding a long term partner.

However, on a positive note, the introduction of civil partnerships in December 2005 was considered a really positive step with nine out of ten believing them to be a good thing for equality.

Dominic James, from Tom, Dick & Sally, said; ‘Finding love is never an easy thing - regardless of your sexuality. However, there is a real misconception that the gay community is all about partying and casual one night stands. Our research shows that the silent majority of gay men and women who are living in the UK today want the stability of a long term relationship just as their heterosexual friends do but they face very real obstacles.

He continued; ‘You get different people wanting different things in all walks of life and we hope this survey illustrates just that.’

Tom, Dick & Sally is a dedicated dating site for gay men and lesbians who are looking for a lasting relationship. Launched in March 2009, the site takes an ethical approach to its members and will always encourage honesty and openness. It has a strong focus on community issues as well as dating.
