UK Budget 2010 - View From the City

LONDON, March 23, 2010 - In the lead-up to tomorrow's budget, the last before the next general
election, broadcaster www.cantos.com asked several financial experts
what they'd like to see Chancellor Alistair Darling pull out of his red box.
While doom-mongers predict an economic apocalypse for the UK, Michael
Baxter, editor of Investment and Business News, gives a more optimistic
interpretation of the data. Providing Mr Darling doesn't do "anything silly"
on Wednesday, the UK's deficit should be fundable in the short and medium
term and the weakness of sterling will boost exports.
Matterley fund manager George Godber assesses how the UK market is likely
to be impacted by a politically-motivated budget. He also explains how there
could be a silver lining to a hung parliament in the forthcoming election.
James Hughes, market analyst at CMC Markets, says only strong words from
Mr Darling will galvanise both voters and the markets and bolster what he
describes as a "nervous" pound.
