The mission will be displaying Dead Sea Cosmetics on these dates at the Pennsylvania Hotel, New York City. The companies’ products will be on show and meetings arranged with potential buyers and the chains.
The Mission has been organized by The Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute (www.export.gov.il/Eng/) and the Israel Manufacturers Association (www.industry.org.il/Eng/) with the help of the Israel Economic Mission (www.israeleconomicmission.com/) in New York. It is important to note that leading chains in the United States, including cosmetics and make-up giant Sephora, are already selling Dead Sea products with great success.
Over 60 Dead Sea cosmetics manufacturers market their products across the globe. These cosmetics are rich in minerals produced from the waters drawn from the Dead Sea and the mud in the surrounding area. According to Mira Geshel, Executive cosmetics division in the Israel Export & International Cooperation Institute, cosmetics containing Dead Sea minerals account for more than 70% of cosmetics and toiletries exported from Israel, accounting for more than 60 million dollars’ worth of income. Dead Sea exports to the United States amount to nearly 40 million dollars.
Dead Sea products are exported all over the world, including Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada, Australia, South Africa and, of course, the United States.
Figures show that the majority of cosmetics containing Dead Sea minerals are targeted for export. In many European and Asian countries, the term “Dead Sea” has acquired an almost magical quality. Women everywhere ascribe healing properties to these products that are as good as medication.
The Dead Sea Products’ Quality Label
Knowing Whether Cosmetics Really Contain Dead Sea Minerals
This year, the Israel Manufacturers Association developed a quality label for Dead Sea products with the aim of drawing a line between the original Dead Sea cosmetics manufacturers and the pirate industry. Manufacturers of genuine Dead Sea products including mud, lotions, creams, and spa products, guarantee protection, sustainable moisturization, and even eternally young skin. They are required to prove that the source of a mud mask is actually the Dead Sea and not some nearby stream, and that the expensive face cream actually contains an appropriate concentration of minerals from the lowest sea in the world - not just table salt!
“The main criterion for being awarded the label is the Dead Sea mineral content,” explains Nurit Feibish, in charge of the cosmetics branch at the Manufacturers’ Association. “Bath salts or mud must contain almost 100% Dead Sea material, while skin products for sensitive areas such as the face and eyes require low concentrations. Either way, the amount must be significant.” Feibish emphasizes that “we shall be refusing labels to companies that do not meet the criteria throughout the whole process.”
Unique Properties of the Dead Sea for Cosmetic Production:
The unique geographical location of the Dead Sea, the concentration of salts in its waters and the unique content of its waters and salts all contribute to the Dead Sea’s unique medicinal properties that have been known to man for thousands of years.
The Dead Sea as a natural phenomenon is unique in the world. It is located at the lowest point on earth, 410 meters below sea level, and contains a range of minerals and plants with proven therapeutic properties as well as cosmetic benefits. The concentration of salts in its waters is 3 times greater than the salt concentration in the oceans. The salt concentration in the Mediterranean is 3.5 percent, which is salty, but the waters of the Dead Sea contain 8.5 times more minerals than the Mediterranean. Another interesting comparison is that the human body contains only 0.9 percent minerals. Incidentally, the concentration of minerals in mineral water for drinking is negligible.
The Dead Sea region has been a center of attraction, containing the essence of vitality health and beauty, whose considerable cosmetic importance was well-known as long ago as the days of Cleopatra, who turned the magical desert oasis into her own personal health spa. Dead Sea minerals are identified as the leading medicinal and cosmetic resource of the State of Israel. Numerous manufacturers market Dead Sea products to countries all over the world, offering a reliable source of treatment for diverse skin complaints.
After thousands of years of human experimentation and folklore relating to the Dead Sea and its powers, modern science has begun to investigate these claims, in order to check their reliability and their origins. Leading physicians and researchers in various fields and as well as commercial cosmetics laboratories have been performing experiments and studies over a number of years, aimed at examining the unique properties of the Dead Sea. The results of these studies have shown that there is much truth in the time-honored claims that the waters of the Dead Sea and its treasures are one-of-a-kind, and indeed contain natural qualities of healing and beauty.
