Intensive Two-Year Training Offered in Science Journalism

GATINAEU, Canada, April 7, 2010 - The World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ) is offering intensive
two-year training in science journalism for journalists in Africa and the
Arab world. Training is available in Arabic, English and French from
September 2010 to September 2012.

Application deadline: 24 April 2010

Applicants must have three years of working experience in journalism and
receive recommendation from a current editor or organization where they
publish work (freelancers).

Every participating journalist (mentee) will benefit from the mentoring
of an experienced science journalist during two years. The mentoring will
provide an opportunity to review the journalistic skills useful to report on
health, the environment, agriculture, science and technology. It will include
editorial commenting up to advice on how to manage editors. Mentoring will
mainly occur over the Internet and telephone but mentors and mentees will
also meet four times in the two years to exchange face-to-face and to receive
intensive training in investigative science reporting.

Mentees will have the opportunity to produce in-depth stories in
partnership with colleagues from other countries.

Mentees will be supported by an expert team of science journalists:

Arabophone group

The group coordinator is Nadia El-Awady, Egypt, International Center for
Journalists.

Mentors are : Raghida Haddad, Lebanon, Environment and Development
magazine; Samir Mahmoud, Egypt, Al-Ahram Al-Masai newspaper; Nehal Lasheen,
Egypt, IslamOnline.net; Ghada Zein Alabidin, Egypt, Al-Akhbar newspaper;
Guido Romeo, Italy, Il Sole 24Ore newspaper. Guido will be mentoring Arab
journalists whose working language is English or French.

Anglophone group

The group coordinator is Akin Jimoh, Nigeria, Development Communications
Network.

Mentors are: Ananyo Bhattacharya, UK, Nature magazine; Martin Enserink,
France, Science magazine; Esther Nakkazi, Uganda, Freelance, Declan
Okpalaeke, Nigeria, News Digest International, Lynne Smit, South Africa, Of

Francophone group:

The group coordinator is Gervais Mbarga, Cameroon, University of Moncton
in New Brunswick.
