By Northrop Grumman Corporation, PRNEMonday, August 30, 2010
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, August 31, 2010 - Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected to supply the
bridge navigation systems for two new superyachts under construction by
Italian yachtbuilder Perini Navi at its shipyards in Viareggio and La Spezia.
The orders for the integrated bridge systems were awarded to Northrop
Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit through Telemar Yachting, Northrop
Grumman Sperry Marine's authorized sales and service representative for the
yacht market in Italy. Telemar Yachting is responsible for designing,
installing, integrating and commissioning the bridge electronics for the two
yachts.
The yachts are the 56-meter aluminum ketch SY Melek, which was launched
in July, and a new-design 55-meter steel-hull motoryacht in Perini Navi's
Vitruvius Explorer series scheduled for delivery in summer 2011. The
motoryacht is being built to American Bureau of Shipping ice-class
specifications for operation in Arctic and Antarctic waters.
"The new megayachts are being fitted with VisionMaster FT(TM)
TotalWatch(TM) multifunction workstations, integrating the electronic
charting system, radars, autopilot, heading and speed sensors in an Ethernet
navigation network," said J. Nolasco DaCunha, vice president, Northrop
Grumman Sperry Marine.
Andy Gifford, managing director of Telemar, said, "The flexibility of the
TotalWatch system allows us to select the VisionMaster FT platform for both
sailing and motor yachts alike, and with the new widescreen presentation it
is even easier to have all the information for the safe navigation of the
vessel at your fingertips."
Perini Navi is a world leader in the construction of luxury yachts. SY
Melek is the 50th megayacht to emerge from the company's renowned shipyard in
Viareggio.
