Teen Signals End to Male (Grease) Monkey Business

EDINBURGH, March 23, 2010 - A Dundee lass is getting geared-up to receive an award at Parliament -
after putting the brakes on rip-off male car mechanics.

Lisa Keogh is staging a one woman war against sexist grease monkeys by
tooling herself up to become a car mechanic and then opening up her own
business where females will get a fair deal.

And by crashing down gender barriers, the belting 18-year-old has made a
fan of national youth charity Rathbone - who are about to make her a Scotland
Achiever of the Year 2010.

Said Lisa: "I read recently that four million women in Britain would
rather drive an unsafe car than visit a garage. But I now know more about
cars than most men do - so they've no chance of fleecing me."

Feisty Lisa fitted her first wheel trim when she was just seven years
old. However, her speedy progress to becoming a mechanic was halted by family
problems. Lisa also quit school at aged 14 because, she said, "they just
wanted me to be a lawyer in a boring old office!" But spells at Rathbone
Dundee's training centre plus Kwik Fit and National Tyres soon had her
accelerating on to an apprenticeship at local Vauxhall garage, Arnold Clark.

"I'm the only female on the floor and that was a bit of a novelty at
first" admits Lisa. "But now I'm just treated as one of the boys and enjoy
the banter."

Presented at the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh on the evening
of Wednesday 24th March, the Rathbone Scotland Achiever of the Year Awards
2010 honour youngsters who've made massive progress through learning (see
following list of winners). Those who have helped young people on that
journey are also saluted.
