CHICHESTER, England, December 20, 2010 - Natures Way Foods' Chairman Robert Langmead says he has his dedicated
team to thank for the success of the Chichester-based prepared salad and
fruit company, after it was named 'Most Sustainable Business' in the 2010
Sussex Business Awards.
Robert Langmead was proud to see Natures Way Foods recognised among the
county's top businesses at the 2010 Sussex Business Awards ceremony
presentation at The Grand, Brighton.
Mr. Langmead said: "The success achieved by Natures Way Foods is thanks
to the dedication, hard work and commitment of our staff, all of whom live
close to our Chichester sites.
"Natures Way Foods is proud to be leading sustainability and
environmental best practice in the packed food sector not just in Sussex but
in the UK. We design and build every aspect of our business mindful of our
position as guardians of the land and of our local community.
"Ten years ago, Natures Way Foods was the first food producer in the UK
to win the much sought after ISO 14001 Environmental Sustainability
accreditation in recognition of the positive action we had taken to reduce
and limit our environmental footprint. In the following decade we have never
looked back.
"To be named the Most Sustainable Business in Sussex is an excellent
achievement and will motivate us to continue and extend our commitment to
caring for the environment, our staff and the local communities in which we
live and work. The environment is, and always will be, a top priority in the
planning, design, development and functioning of everything we do as a
business."
Environmental initiatives pioneered by Natures Way Foods include
filtering the water used to wash the company's salad before it is bagged.
This water is then reused to irrigate the salad crops. Its efforts to cut
water consumption have resulted in a 14% reduction in water usage, while 94%
of the company's waste is composted or recycled, including all waste metal.
Habitat initiatives at its sites include the use of roof rainwater run
off to create and feed wildlife ponds at Runcton; ditch clearing to create
better conditions for resident water voles; and encouraging increasingly
scarce native Sussex species such as moorhens, dragonflies, newts and frogs
to make their homes on the company's properties.
2010 has been a year of recognition for Natures Way Foods, with the
company being singled out by CRF International as one of 'Britain's Top
Employers' for its exemplary polices towards its staff. Natures Way Foods
also won a Food Manufacturing Excellence Award for its forward-thinking
approach to its employees and for developing its new Lasting Leaf salad
range.
A total of 36 Sussex businesses made it to the final of the 2010 Sussex
Business Awards, drawn from more than 200 entries from across the county.
