Statement by the Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Vaduz-Vienna/Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna
By Liechtenstein Museum, PRNEMonday, December 14, 2009
VIENNA, December 15 - It is with regret that we must announce that the exhibition at the Royal
Academy in London will now not take place.
Johann Kräftner, director of the Collections of the Prince of
Liechtenstein, Vaduz-Vienna/Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna, said:
"The Prince does not think it is appropriate to proceed with the planned
exhibition until the matter of a painting by Sanchez Coello is resolved. When
that happens we will reconsider the idea of a show at the Royal Academy at
some future date."
Note to editors
1. The painting "The infante Don Diego" by Sanchez Coello was purchased
by the Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein in spring 2006.
2. The painting was impounded on 12 September 2007 by the UK authorities
because of an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs, still not concluded,
which in no way involved the Collections of the Prince of
Liechtenstein/Liechtenstein Museum.
3. No export licence will be considered until the investigation is
concluded.
4. The National Gallery has been offered the painting but cannot consider
purchasing it until the investigation is concluded.
5. The painting has been released to the Collections of the Prince of
Liechtenstein/Liechtenstein Museum but may not leave the UK.
6. The exhibition at the Royal Academy was to take place from September
to December 2010.
