BERLIN, November 24, 2010 - Yesterday the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin was awarded the
"Berliner Umweltpreis" in the Berlin city hall. Dr. Ignacio Campino (Deutsche
Telekom) who hosted the award presentation, lauded in his speech the
extraordinary commitment and the professionalism with which the hotel made a
big step towards an eco friendly business. He valued very highly the fact
that the Steigenberger Hotel took a pioneer role in the corporate group and
in the entire tourism industry.
The Steigenberger Hotel Berlin has been awarded for its
environmental protection concept. Guests like to act ecologically sensitive -
with neither effort nor additional costs and they get a service with a carbon
emission free energy balance. All environmental protection efforts are
embedded in an environment management system that is certified to ISO 14001!
"The collection system with 16 differentiations of both
recyclables and waste, the fitting of water conservation fixtures and
purchasing of eco-electricity all go without saying, and for years are second
nature to us. True sustainability however asks for further reaching actions",
says General Manager, Torsten Schulze. With immediate effect the hotel
receives central heating purely generated from regenerative sources.
The starting signal was given 2007 with the renovation of our
convention centre where all applied materials were produced taking
sustainable resources into consideration. More than 10 Million Euros were
spent on the renovation. The renovation of all bed rooms was just completed
and here as well all ecological aspects were taken into consideration.
Of particular note is the breakfast buffet, which has been
awarded the official organic signet. The food and the culinary methods are
organic, as well as the food provision in the conference area. All food
purchases are of organic origin and, where possible, bought from regional
suppliers. By doing so the hotel reduces the carbon foot-print due to reduced
transportation and lower emissions.
Since the beginning of this year all lights were changed to
LED technology. In addition with the energy savings by water and waste, this
yields a saving of 163.000 Euros annually. With the aid of the environment
management system ISO 14001 all procedures are structured. It goes without
saying that further goals are constantly thought of, worked towards and
established in our company environmental policy.
