PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, March 16, 2010 - Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical, and
medical information products and services, announced today that Prof. Maurice
Courbage
(Universite Denis Diderot - Paris 7) and Prof. Paolo Grigolini
(University of North Texas, USA) have been appointed as the new

Prof. Courbage works in the Theory of Complex Systems research
group of the Universite Denis Diderot - Paris 7. His research interests
include nonlinear science and complexity, including quantum and classical
statistical mechanics, neurodynamics, ergodic theory and cellular automata.
Prof. Grigolini is a member of the Center for Nonlinear Science at the
University of Texas where he works on quantum mechanics, statistical physics,
complex networks and biological systems, in particular the complexity in
neurophysiological processes.

In addition to the two new co-Editors-in-Chief, Chaos, Solitons &
Fractals has refined its Aims & Scope, which now center on the
interdisciplinary theme of complexity. The journal has also undergone some
changes in the editorial structure. Regular articles, letters and reviews, as
well as "Frontiers" papers, up-to-date overviews of a particular field, will
be the main article types throughout the journal. The journal also has a new
look, including the cover and will be published in two column formatting.
Submissions will be accepted shortly at ees.elsevier.com/chaos/.

"It is our ambition to develop Chaos, Solitons & Fractals into a
leading journal in the exciting field of complexity", commented Prof.
Grigolini.

Prof. Courbage added, "One of the main hallmarks of the journal
will be the interdisciplinarity of complex systems. We are pleased to be
joined by some excellent editorial board members, who will be instrumental in
attracting leading authors in the field."

While welcoming two respectable scientists as new Editors-in-Chief for the leading Elsevier journal Chaos, Solitons & Fractals it is regrettable that the journal narrowed its scope considerably and quite honestly to its disadvantage. We understand that a commercial publisher which Elsevier is may be quite sensitive to justified or unjustified criticism. What we cannot fathom is the strong reaction which Elsevier showed towards a rather cheap blogosphere campaign against certain journals owned by Elsevier including Chaos, Solitons & Fractals. All the allegations made were clearly inaccurate and motivated by rivalry and jealousy. The criticism was mainly directed against the Founding Editor in Chief Prof. M.S. El Naschie. In such circumstances why change the entire Editorial Board which included leading scientists and pioneers of nonlinear dynamics, fractal and chaos research such as Itamar Procaccia of Israel, Mitchel Feigenbaum, USA, James Yorke, USA, Otto Rossler, Germany and Laurent Nottale, France to mention only a few. Worse still why take out all the engineering? Chaos, Solitons & Fractals distinguished itself by mingling in measured doses mathematics, physics and engineering. The objective of the journal was always application. Complexity theory is simply a tool. To change Chaos, Solitons & Fractals to just another mathematical journal is extremely sad and will reduce it to just one of many. I have sufficient faith in Prof. Courbage and Prog. Grigolini who worked closely with one of the spiritual fathers of Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine, to expect that they will remedy the situation and will restore Chaos, Solitons & Fractals to its past before the unhappy events connected to an unscientific campaign took place.
